St John the Baptist, Belleau
Rebuilt in the 1300s and again in 1862, with a medieval preaching cross and a knight’s effigy from the ruined Greenfield Priory.
Dedicated to St John the Baptist
St John the Baptist was the great forerunner of Christ, who calls us to draw close to God in humble repentance — remembered for holding to his principles even at the cost of his life.
The church underwent major rebuilding in the early 1300s and again in 1862, giving it a layered history of medieval and Victorian work side by side. In the churchyard stands the base of a medieval preaching cross.
Inside is a 13th-century effigy of a knight in chain mail, thought to have come from the nearby Cistercian priory at Greenfield, and a commemorative tablet on the south wall to Sir Henry Vane — a colonial governor of Massachusetts who later served under Cromwell and was executed after the Restoration of Charles II.
