St Martin, Withcall
A secluded Wolds church with a wartime story, a poet’s family connection, and views across open farmland.
Dedicated to St Martin of Tours
St Martin of Tours was a Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and gave up military service, later becoming a bishop. He is best remembered for dividing his own military cloak in two to share with a beggar suffering in the cold.
Tucked into a secluded fold of the Wolds — Withcall has only one way in and out — St Martin’s offers beautiful views across the surrounding farmland. Inside, a display and stained glass window are dedicated to the church’s patron saint.
The church also holds information on a nearby RAF Mosquito crash from Operation Market Garden (Arnhem), and on Emily Tennyson, mother of the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who was baptised here where her father served as rector.
