St Oswald’s, Strubby
A 13th-century church rebuilt in 1857, with a medieval effigy, an Elizabethan memorial, and a window telling the story of RAF Strubby.
Dedicated to St Oswald
St Oswald was a king of ancient Northumbria whose conversion to Christianity helped spread the faith through England. He was killed in battle in 642 fighting a pagan rival — “St Oswald, pray for us!”
The church dates back to the 13th century but was substantially rebuilt in 1857. Inside, an early 14th-century headless effigy of a civilian lies in the chancel, alongside a memorial tablet to William Ballett of Woodthorpe Hall (d. 1648, aged 99), shown in Elizabethan dress with his two wives.
A distinctive stained glass window celebrates the rural, religious and farming heritage of the area, and the church displays material on local rural life and on RAF Strubby — a Class A airfield opened in 1943 under Bomber Command, and the Lincolnshire airfield that lay closest to occupied Europe.
