Holy Baptism
Baptism is the beginning of a journey with God which continues for the rest of our lives — the first step in response to God’s love.
What the Service Means
The baptism service uses several symbolic elements. The cross is a badge representing faith and Christ’s sacrifice. Water symbolises dying to sin and rising to new life, uniting us with Christ’s resurrection. The candle represents the light of Christ conquering the darkness of evil.
Godparents & Promises
Baptism involves solemn promises, comparable to wedding vows. Godparents must themselves have been baptised, and ideally confirmed, and take on the sacred duty of bringing up the child in the faith of the Church.
Before the Service
The priest conducting the service will meet with you beforehand — ideally including godparents — to explain the service, answer questions, and help you understand the vows involved.
